Mud Demon

Mud demons are the predatory creatures found on the planet known only as "Not-Furya". Riddick encounters them early on in the film Riddick.

Habitat[]

The mud demons live on the scorched planet and lie dormant within the ground or pools of water until the planet's monsoon season begins. When it rains, they emerge from the ground ready to devour and kill, since they need to have their skin wet at all times.

Physiology[]

They are similar in some respects to scorpions, some reptiles and amphibians. They come in a variety of sizes, bearing razor sharp teeth, two legs, and a three-pronged prehensile tail, used primarily for grabbing and impaling. The mud demons have also developed breathing holes in their tails to remain submerged even longer.[1] Their bite is paralyzing and venomous, depending on their size. The juveniles are more dangerous than the adults because they can't control the amount of venom injected into their prey (a trait falsley assosciated with real world snakes). Males are seen to have red stripes throughout their entire body while females have one solid color scheme.[2] Mud Demons also seem to be able to survive without a few organs, as the one Riddick disemboweled was still alive immediately following the disembowelment.

Behavior and Diet[]

Mud demons are carnivorous and highly aggressive. Adults are usually solitary ambush predators, and trick their prey during the dry season by raising their tails out of the water to hypnotize their victims before striking. When a monsoon hits, however, they will attempt to overwhelm their quarry in groups. They are also not above cannibalism, shown when a mud demon ate its own innards despite being disemboweled by Riddick moments earlier.
