Butcher Bay Correctional Facility is the setting of The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. It is a triple-max prison located on Butcher Bay in the Thelriss System, home to some of the most wanted criminals in the galaxy.
Description
Classed as triple-max, Butcher Bay Correctional Facility provides a highly controlled custody level and is famous for being inescapable. It is a three-level security prison, with the "single-max" unit being on the surface of the planet, the "double-max" - the underground, functioning as a mining facility, and the "triple-max" - a massive storage facility where the most violent prisoners are in cryo-sleep. The surrounding territory has mines, and inmates who will manage to escape would find themselves in an endless planetary desert.
Single-max

The single-max unit is on the surface of the planet. There are different cell blocks, some of which in control by gangs. Inmates live in two-bed cells. Prisoner monitoring happens through security auto camera-turrets, and there is a relative absence of guards.
There is a courtyard with a hole that leads into the Pit — sewage. It is the home to mutant Dwellers. An inmate Pope Joe resides in the sewers to offer medical assistance for favors.
Double-max
The double-max unit is underground and consists of a high-level security facility and a mining area. The cell blocks are vertical storage sections where inmates live in closed containers alone. There are auto camera-turrets and guards on the ground.
In the courtyard, there is an arena where inmates fight to the death for money, weapons, and cigarettes.
Triple-max

The triple-max unit is a storage facility on top of the massive prison tower. Here are kept the most dangerous and valuable inmates. They are always kept in cryogenic human containers and allowed to be awake for two minutes per day. The facility is fully automated and monitored by robots.
Guards' Quarters
Known as "Pigsville," it is the living quarters of the prison guards and some privileged and informant inmates. There are shower rooms, locker rooms, courtyards, shops, and individual suites. Pigsville connects to the Pit through a passageway.
History
Single-max Riot by Riddick

With Riddick arriving in Butcher Bay, it rapidly went into decline. In the single-max unit, Riddick killed Rust, starting a riot, which led to multiple inmates' and guards' deaths. Almost killing Abbott, Riddick was captured and forced Hoxie to send him down to the double-max unit.
Double-max Xeno Invasion
Getting caught with drugs (or fighting in the arena), Riddick got the attention of Abbott, who, seeking revenge, apprehended Riddick only to die in a duel. Riddick made his way to the mines, where detonating a bomb, opened the way to populated areas for aggressive Xenos. The Xeno invasion led to the evacuation of Butcher Bay, with security guards fighting off aliens. After trying to hijack Johns' spaceship, Riddick was captured again and sent to the triple-max unit, an inmate storage facility with prisoners kept in cryo-sleep.
Triple-max Havoc and Hoxie's Death
Riddick was put into cryo-sleep at the triple-max unit, having rare two-minute wake-ups. He managed to fool the facility system and escaped, hijacking the elite prison guard robot. Roaming through Butcher Bay, Riddick reached Hoxie's office, where he killed Hoxie after defeating robotic bodyguards and left the prison and the planet together with Johns on a spaceship.
Although Riddick severely ruined Butcher Bay and killed the warden, the prison apparently remained in operation as Alexander Toombs mentioned it as a possible place to take Riddick years later while wondering what prison would pay the most for him now. Riddick simply quipped "Butcher Bay. Ten minutes every other day on the dog run. Protein waffles aren't bad."
Personnel
Butcher Bay is operated by warden Hoxie with his second-in-command Abbott as the head of security. There are hundreds of security and service prison personnel.

Inmates
Butcher Bay inmate population is solely male and is highly diverse, consisting of people of different races, religious beliefs, backgrounds, social statuses, etc. Both single- and double-max units have gangs; presumably, the Aquilans were at the top of the gang hierarchy due to the leader Rust directly answering to Abbott.
